THE HISTORY OF THEOLOGICAL EDUCATION IN SIM/ECWA IN NIGERIA
The Evangelical Church Winning All (formerly Evangelical Church of West Africa) is a well-known church denomination in the whole world. The church is an offshoot of Sudan Interior Mission (SIM). We all know SIM (Sudan Interior Mission) effort to evangelize through education and health services. Though we have had Education administration from the inception of the Church in 1893, the ECWA Education Department was established officially in 1987. It is a continuation of the ministry of glorifying God through education and health services. This is what ECWA is also known for through this arm of her Christian ministry known as ECWA Education Department.
The department is an educational arm of ECWA that was established to literally help converts have the ability to read and teach the word of God. The goal and purpose of education in ECWA is to attain the knowledge of the gospel of Christ, the propagation of the gospel of Christ, and the strengthening of Christianity in Africa guided the development of the philosophy, policy activities, and programmes of education.
This Department has two major Units, the Theological Education Unit and the General Education Unit headed by Head of Units namely, Theological and Tertiary Education Secretary and General Education Secretary under the ECWA Director of Education. Theological Education Unit was in charge of all Theological Seminaries, Bible Colleges and Theological Training Institutes and later Tertiary Institutions and the unit head is responsible to the ECWA Education Director. Then, we have the General Education Unit. This Unit is a section in the ECWA Education Department that oversees and coordinates ECWA Educational activities and programmes in all ECWA Nursery, Primary, and Secondary Schools.
The ECWA Education Department is a resume for holistic education to effect transformation of the Church and society in the propagation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the training of converts. ECWA Education Department seeks to glorify God by coordinating schools through curriculum development, monitoring, evaluation and supervision, approval of the establishment of schools, capacity building, and consultancy services for excellence.
We promote Bible-based, Christ-centered education for the development of the total person through enriching activities centered on Christian growth. We shall also provide a conducive and stimulating learning environment at all levels of schooling. And inculcate into the youth the right values in order to produce competent professionals, honest entrepreneurs, and goodly leaders for the transformation of church and society. Major curriculum of the department is centered on 4Cs (Communication, Collaboration, Creativity and Critical Thinking).
It is my joy to thank ECWA leaders, past and present, for establishing this department. Equally, I appreciate all our past and present leaders for their contributions to the department. I assure you that all our ECWA nursery, primary, and secondary schools, colleges of technology; colleges of education; medical schools, theological institutions; and Bingham University are institutions of ECWA where sound and Bible-based education are offered throughout the nation. All ECWA schools and tertiary institutions are all world-class institutions of learning.
